The glamour of those yesteryears. |
July of 1958
It is so hard to believe, that a lifetime of 49 years have already passed by? Where have the years gone by? In July of 1958, I was just 11 years old, and was about to 'fall in love with MISS UNIVERSE' for the rest of my life! ...

Miss Brazil, First Runner-up. |
This was my very first exposure to the 'international beauty set.' Having only seen photos of different countries, and not even National Costumes, so when the delegates, arrived in Long Beach, it all came to life for me.
The beautiful faces, and especially accents, were too much to absorb. Back then, the foreign girls, came from good families and were all most cultured and well mannered.... not the Paris Hilton's or Britney Spears of today....!
For the ten day event, the pageant was shown on LIVE local television, so by the end of the pageant, everyone, had their own favorites, including me. (During these telecasts, many back stage interviews, went on, making it easy to know, each delegate.) I liked, Colombia, Chile, Japan and of course USA. Gladys Zender was so sophisticated and well spoken, and always ready to talk via the television.
On one of the first telecasts, I recall, that Gladys was being interviewed for Chilean radio.... something, so exciting for me.
The daily newspapers, locally in Los Angeles, and Long Beach were deluged with photos and stories of the contestants. Even when Luz Marina won, she made the front pages, of all of these dailies. To this day, I still have all of these press clippings, and all in mint condition; actually, this is how I started my extensive collection of MU and Miss International memorabilia.
The pageants that were held in Long Beach, during this era, were held with glamour, dignity and excitement. There was even a LIVE orchestra.
Congratulations Raquel Molina, for being such a lovely MISS CHILE for the last 49 years.
DIOS le bendiga.
